What’s the secret to a productive day? Just get dressed! Feel and be your best. Don’t do it for anyone else. Do it for yourself.

Lyric Rivera, an Autistic self-advocate from Texas, runs the the internationally recognized neurodiversity lifestyle blog Neurodivergent Rebel. Neurodivergent Rebel was opened in 2016, as a way to introduce people unfamiliar with autism to neurodiversity. The blog, which is sometimes released in written format and also via YouTube video, explores the ideology of neurodiversity and the creative expressions of autistic people. Riveras’ blog pushes for acceptance of neurological differences and respect for the autonomy of neurodivergent people. Lyric is also known as the pioneer of the #AskingAutistics hashtag, which is often accompanied by a short question about everyday autistic experiences. This simple hashtag connects neurodiverse people who would not otherwise have a reason to engage with each other to foster understanding of the autistic experience. View all posts by Lyric Holmans
I say whatever works for you. I kind of feel the same way though – I dress only to impress myself and what I’m comfortable wearing. For me it’s eyeliner, earrings, usually just a simple t-shirt and short shorts. Do I care that the powers that be say guys shouldn’t wear makeup, earrings or skimpy shorts? Not at all. I don’t give a crap about anyone else’s opinion. It’s in the eye of the beholder. I’ve adopted the look I like for myself and I’ve learned to own my look and be confident in it.
I work from home most days but I still get up, shower, get dressed and put on a make up. Days that I stay in pj’s and don’t get dressed I accomplish far less – my brain is trained that way. Pj’s mean Netflix and the couch, masacara means it’s time to get crap done. 🙂
My special thing is nailpolish right now, although it changes. Being able to shuffle around in pjs makes me super happy too. Coffee makes me happy/productive if I have stuff to do. When I go out, I’ve been making extra effort… because I was homebound for a while with my broken ankle.
Sometimes, people think I’m crazy. I’ll put on something really nice to sit around and write to pen pals. I figure I bought the nice clothes, I might as well enjoy them😊
I find that if I make my bed in the morning right away and then go to my writing desk first thing in the morning I feel more productive than days when I sleep in. (But…less well rested).
God, you are so right aren’t you? I’m tweeting this.
Wow! Thank you!
This is like the hardest thing for me at times. I usually go through my whole morning routine before I get to this point, and by that time I can get distracted into one of my special interests. But then again, I stay at home most days so it’s easy to just sit around in clothes from the day before. -Violet-
I’ve done it many times myself. But when I remember my day will be better if I get it all done, sometimes I am motivated to do what I need to do.
I’m still trying to figure out what I need to do to have a productive day. My day always begins with getting dressed, but the problem is sometimes getting out of bed. My productivity fluctuates quite a bit from day to day and goes down quite a bit if I have to do something that scares me or I don’t like doing that day.
I feel you! Just if I force myself up then force myself dressed – the day is always better than if I don’t.
