One significant obstacle holding back the advancement of NeuroDivergent People in society is the fact that our world has been designed to cater to the NeuroTypical Average (members of the Neuro-Majority).
In catering to those in the Neuro-Majority, our society has neglected those in the Neuro-Minority. This is particularly true for those of us with multiple overlapping NeuroTypes (or brain types), who often face additional challenges or are multiply marginalized in other ways.
Hostile Environments
Many NeuroDivergent People live in a world where the environment is perpetually neglecting our needs, which adds increased daily stress to our lives. This is further complicated by the fact that the people around us are often inflexible and impatient with us when we struggle to assimilate easily into the spaces around us.
We are like plants blamed for not growing despite being potted in the wrong soil and climate and with an incorrect amount of sun and water.

From the beginning, we were set up to fail, and then our failures were used as ‘evidence’ of our ‘inadequacies’ while ignoring the factors and lack of support that led to those failures.
How can we thrive when many of us do not even have our most basic needs met?
The unfit environment is one reason I (and many other NeuroDivergent People) frequently experience high mental and emotional stress loads (that are often already “at capacity” before we even leave the house), and this continued higher stress load leads many of us to the types of re-occurrent burnouts (discussed in my post last week).
